Looking back at what started in 1988 as an idea, then in 1989 became a grassroots movement of carers and service providers, we now see an organisation that has grown and evolved to become an organisation servicing both metropolitan and rural South Australia.

Ground-swell movement of carers meets and forms the SA Carers Network Committee.
What happened in 1990
South Australian Carers Association Inc is formed, November 1990.
What happened in 1991
Association’s application for funding approved.
First Carers Awareness Week.
What happened in 1997
First regional office - Northern Country Carers opens in Port Augusta.
Carer Resource Centre opens.

South East Carers and Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre opens in Mt Gambier.

River Murray and Mallee Carers office opens.
What happened in 2000
Western Carers office opens in Royal Park.
What happened in 2001
Opening of Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre office in Murray Bridge.
What happened in 2005
South Australian Carers Recognition Act 2005 passed.
This Act aims to ensure carers have the same rights, choices and opportunities as other South Australians. It recognises the importance of carers' health and wellbeing, and acknowledges the valuable role of carers in the community.

Carer Advisory and Counselling Service established by bringing together the Carer Resource Centre and National Carer Counselling Service.
What happened in 2009
Eyre Peninsula Carers office opens in Pt Lincoln.
What happened in 2012
Official opening of our new State Office at 66 Greenhill Road Wayville by our patron the Governor of South Australia Kevin Scarce and Mrs Liz Scarce.

Young Carer Recognition Award Ceremony at Government House hosted by our patron the Governor of South Australia Kevin Scarce and Mrs Liz Scarce.
Sponsorship of the inaugural Carers SA Carer Achievement Award as part of the Australian Community Achievement Awards.

Sponsored the successful Carers SA Carer Achievement Award 2014.
No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) commenced.
Co-location of our Port Pirie, Whyalla and Port Augusta offices to a new refurbished office in Port Augusta.

25 year anniversary.
Achieved Australian Service Excellence Standards Certification.

Opened offices in Victor Harbour and Kangaroo Island to offer carer support services to Southern Fleurieu Peninsula.
