With the introduction of the new national carer support model in April 2020, Carers SA will undergo an organisational-wide restructure.

The national carer support model consolidates the funding from over eighty separate organisations to ten delivery partners across Australia, including Carers SA. As one of the selected providers, Carers SA, in conjunction with its consortia partners Dementia Australia, Skylight, NPY Women’s Council and Life Without Barriers, will deliver support and services to unpaid carers under the government’s new framework. The model, inclusive of the Carer Gateway, will focus on early intervention, preventative and skill building supports to improve carer well-being and long term outcomes.

David Militz, Carers SA CEO, says the restructure includes: consolidating administration responsibilities, centralising the brokering of respite and intake/assessment; mobilisation of regional staff out of stand-alone offices and the creation of two community engagement positions.

The organisational restructure has been designed to realign roles and responsibilities and efficiently provide services to carers. This restructure has resulted in a number of voluntary redundancies, and Carers SA CEO David Militz says “the Executive Management Team has been supporting our staff with a transparent change management process that includes outplacement services for those who have accepted redundancies.”

In all regional locations state-wide, Carers SA staff will relocate from a stand-alone office to either co-locating with local service providers or being mobile. Once the new carer support model begins in April 2020 Carers SA will have an increased regional and metropolitan presence and will continue to provide face-to-face supports to carers.

David Militz, Carers SA CEO says “Carers SA has been supporting unpaid carers in this state for nearly 30 years and we are confident this new direction for Carers SA will ensure that we continue to manage our respite and carer support services professionally, with the overall aim of achieving the best outcomes for unpaid carers in South Australia.”

“The creation of two Community Engagement positions, will allow us to continue to engage with local communities and service providers to ensure a smooth transition for carers to the new system.”

David Militz said “the new organisational structure will be rolled out from January 2020, to ensure all staff are trained and confidently working within their roles for the start of the new carer support model in April 2020.”

Carers SA will continue to provide face-to-face supports past April 2020 and all carer services will complement those available online via the Carer Gateway.

Carers SA is advising government, industry providers and community sector stakeholders of the restructure.
