Starting in September 2019, the world of services for carers is undergoing an Australia wide quantum shift.

The federally funded Integrated Carer Support Service (weblink: ICSS) is designed to address some of the core needs of carers. ICSS budgets will consolidate some federal and state funded services for carers.

The 1.8 million carers in Australia – around 245,000 family carers in South Australia – will be affected by the introduction of the ICSS.

Carers SA has been providing services for carers for nearly 29 years and is a fierce advocate for the rights and recognition of the work of South Australian carers.

Carers SA has voiced concerns that emerging funding gaps associated with the introduction of the ICSS require ongoing state based funding commitments to carers and future budget considerations.

Some of the expected funding gaps to come are likely to relate to:

  • Respite for carers,
  • Personalised face to face professional support, and
  • Sustainable and meaningful services for particularly vulnerable carer groups.

Over the next few weeks, Carers SA will hold Carer Forums across South Australia, to discuss and inform carers about

  • What the new federal integrated system of carer services will look like for South Australian carers,
  • Similarities and differences between the currently available carer services and the ICSS,
  • Potential implication to currently state funded services for carers, and
  • How Carers SA will guide the transition of carers receiving current services to ICSS services.

Forums are currently planned as follows:
