Carers SA Young Carers Project
Objectives
The objective of the project is to support young carers in their caring role by:

  • Providing them with a clearly identifiable and accessible point of contact for information, advice and referral services
  • Providing more co-ordinated and age specific information
  • Providing young carers with access to age specific counselling and support services
  • Increasing awareness amongst young carers of the information and support services available and
  • Increasing awareness of young carer issues within the community, including schools, counsellors and peers.

 

Outcomes

  • Young Carers Information and Advice Kits - Produced by Family and Community Services the kits are specifically designed to provide a one-stop resource for Young Carers. The Young Carers Kits were produced in close consultation with Young Carers and seek to provide a range of information, ideas and supports for Young Carers. This Information and Advice Kit can be obtained by contacting Carers SA.
  • Young Carers in Education Presentation - a valuable resource for all schoolds to increase awareness and support for Young Carers. Contact Carers SA; Young Carers Project Worker, to arrange a suitable time for Carers SA to make a presentation to your school or class. The 'Young Carers Issues Affecting Their Education' booklet is distributed following the presentation.
  • Young Carers Issues Affecting Their Education - This booklet has been developed with the assistance of Young Carers and their families for the purpose of providing teachers and school counsellors with information about young people who perform a caring role at home. This resource aims to assist Young Carers to gain recognition and structured processes to assist them when accessing support to enable them to complete their education.
