Training for Carers

Support Materials for Carers
The Carers Support Materials have been produced to support family Carers by:

  • Building on the skills and abilities that Carers already have
  • Highlighting particular issues that Carers experience and suggesting strategies to deal with them
  • Increasing Carers confidence in their role of caring
  • Assisting Carers in identifying resources and organisations that can support them in their role

Resources available
include booklets on Communication for Carers, Advocacy for Carers and Rights and Responsibilities for Carers. A manual Handling resource was also developed as part of this project.

Communication for Carers

This booklet is concerned with some of the communication issues facing Carers when they are talking to professionals, their own families, or the person for whom they care. As well as the communication skills of listening, clarifying, and offering feedback, the materials go into record keeping, legal and medical matters, medications and complaints.

This resource can be used by either individual Carers or Carer Groups.

Rights and Responsibilities for Carers

This booklet is concerned with the ability of Carers to recognise their rights as well as acknowledging their responsibilities. Once again, Carers are encouraged to care for themselves. The booklet explores how to manage a safe home environment, developing long and short term plans, giving medication, and general financial and legal matters as well as some information on palliative care.

Advocacy for Carers

This booklet focuses on the rights of the person for whom Carers care. It highlights the need for an action plan and the skills needed for supporting others. Confidentiality is also raised as a key area for discussion.

The three Carer Support Booklets were produced by the Carers SA with funding from the Government of South Australia.
