Carer Support Programs in South Australia
Carers SA recognises the enormous contribution made by Carers to both the person they care for and to the community. The Association also recognises the special stresses and demands - emotional, physical and financial that exist in the lives of Carers.

As a result a number of Carer programs have been developed by Carers SA.

Why Carer Support Program
It is the belief of Carers SA that Carers are in the best position to provide the knowledge to other Carers on how to access services like information and support. In order to connect Carers to these services, Carers SA has actively developed and supported Carer networks across the State.

If you are a Carer, we can link you with other Carers throughout the State. Participating in this program allows you to share your experiences of caring and to provide and receive support. Carer Support Programs acknowledge Carers and their role.

Where do these programs operate?
Carers SA has implemented its Carer Support program in five regions across South Australia. Each support program has a Advisory Group with Carer members to provide direct input into the program.

The five regions are:
Eyre Peninsula and the Far West - Eyre Carers
Upper Spencer Gulf, the Far North and
Upper Mid North - Northern Country Carers
Upper and Lower SouthEast - South East Carers
The Riverland, Murraylands and
Mallee - River Murray and Mallee Carers
Western Metropolitan Adelaide - Western Carers

This program is funded by the State Government's Home and Community Care program.

Other Carer Support Programs
Across the state of South Australia, other organisations offer Carer Support Programs. Contact details are available at the Carer Advisory Service on toll free 1800 242 636.

How does Carers SA's Carer Support Program Work?
Carers become part of a network and receive information about events and gatherings. An element of these gatherings is that time is allowed for Carers to talk and share their experiences. The gatherings provide a valuable way to meet other Carers. Once part of the network information is automatically sent to Carers about local and special events and other relevant information. Carers are encouraged to be members of regional or local committees.

Carer Support Groups
Many small Carer Support Groups operate across South Australia. These groups also offer support, time out from their caring role, and an opportunity to share information and recognition of the role of Carers and their contribution to the community. The groups may be made up of Carers who care for a person with a specific illness or disability (for example Dementia, Multiple Sclerosis or Autism) or they may have a broader membership. These types of groups may be connected or associated with a Carer Support Program or they may operate independently or be connect to another organisation.
