Respite

Respite Care
"Taking a break" from caring is important to give Carers some relief from their caring role. It may consist of a few hours a week, overnight, weekends, or may be longer.

It is not uncommon for Carers to become exhausted and/or feel overwhelmed. It is important to "take time out"or "take a break". This safeguards their own physical and emotional wellbeing and assists them in their caring role.

Taking breaks can be difficult at first but taken regularly they benefit both the Carer and the person being cared for.

There are a number of different types of respite, and they are;

  • Regular Planned
  • Occasional Unplanned
  • Occasional Planned
  • Emergency Out of Hours
Respite can occur in different ways and the needs of the Carer and the person they care for will be discussed to ensure that the most appropriate form is offered. Respite may be offered as;
  • Home-based (in own home)
  • Residential (in a residential facility or setting outside the home)
  • Day Care and Recreational (may be offered at a residential facility or a community facility)
