New Carers SA Website is now live

Carers SA, Carers Australia and the other state Carer Associations have been working hard developing a new website sharing all the information gained from working together across Australia. The new site was developed with very strong input from Carers and is designed to provide the information Carers and thoses who want to know more about Carers need in a faster easy way. The site is not yet fully complete, there are a range of new features we are developing, but you can have a look at what we are working on now by clicking here.

We will continue to have this the "old" site aviable for a few months so you can readily look up what you need until you are used to the new site. From the development team here at Carers SA we hope you enjoy the new site.

Carer Inquiry - Update

The Federal Inquiry into better support for Carers has now reached the end of it's first stage of consultation with the deadline from submissions now past. Early reports suggest that public response to the Inquiry has been very strong with over a thousand submissions received.

Carers SA along with Carers Australia and the network of Carers Association across Australia have complied submissions to inform the Inquiry as to the local and national issues effecting Carers.

Inquiry into better support for Carers

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Family, Community, Housing and Youth has announced an inquiry to look into the support provided to Carers and is calling for submissions from organisations and individuals.

This is a rare and important opportunity to help inform the Federal Government about the realities of Caring and improve the support provided to Carers. Carers SA encourages all interested carers to have their say and put a letter or submission into the inquiry.

To find out more about the inquiry you can visit the Inquiry's web page Link: parliamentary Inquiry web page

If you would like to put in a submission but are not sure where to start we have put together a template to help get you started.
NOTE: The Inquiry has now closed to submissions

You do not need to use these templates the inquiry will accept a wide range of submission from letters to very detailed submissions if you wish to know more about what is acceptable select the link below for details

Remember submissions and letters to the inquiry are due by the 4th of July 2008.

Caring about Housing

A growing issue for Carers is the availability of suitable housing for people with a mental illness. With policy changes and a greater emphasis on living in the community, avoiding housing stress for the mentally ill is an important factor in creating positive conditions for recovery. It is clear that a lack of suitable housing creates greater problems and demands on carers of the mentally ill.

“Many ageing carers have cared for and supported their adult children with a mental illness for many years, but with the carers’ own advancing years they are struggling to continue to carry the extra load. The Mental Health Carers Housing Group is now calling for action to improve the current situation,” Ms Warmington CEO of Carers said.

SA Research Released - Carers at increased health risk

The Health and Wellbeing of Adult Family Carers in South Australia was released today (February 11) and found that 70 per cent of carers were significantly more likely to develop at least one or more chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, than non-carers.

Carers SA CEO Rosemary Warmington said the figures highlighted the urgent need to address the personal clinical health needs of family carers within the health care system.
