Carers SA Working with Aboriginal Carers
Carers SA continues to strengthen its relationship with Aboriginal
Carers. Historically, Carers SA worked in partnership with the Council
of Aboriginal Elders to jointly support Aboriginal Carers throughout
South Australia. Carers SA now works with the Aboriginal Partnership
Group which involves a wider group of Aboriginal Organisations.
The Aboriginal Partnership Group recognises and adopts the Iga
Warta principles as a guide to working together
- The project must be sustainable in funding, leadership, co-ordination
& continuous evaluation
- The project must have a pro-active and preventative approach
- It must address the basic needs of health, food water, housing
unemployment etc
- It must have an Aboriginal Community and Family approach
- It must respect Aboriginal cultural sensitivities such as Aboriginal
time and space
- It must work toward continuity between regions and Adelaide,
considering and working with other projects
- Improve services through this cultural partnership helping to
review educate and develop how we work with Carers
Carers SA also adopts the principles in the "Cultural Respect
Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health 2004-2009"
- A holistic approach to Aboriginal Health (including Carer health)
- Responsibility needs to be accepted across the Health Sector
- Supporting Community involvement in Healthcare
- Localized decision making and input
- Promotion of good health to the Aboriginal Community
- Build capacity of services and communities
- Accountability for outcomes in Aboriginal Health.
Aboriginal Partnership Group
Carers SA works with the Aboriginal Partnership Group that meets
four times a year to help our links with Aboriginal organisations.
The partnership is about finding ways to work together and how best
to get help and support to Aboriginal Carers.
The Aboriginal Partnership Group includes people from Carers SA,
Council of Aboriginal Elders, Aboriginal Health Council, Aboriginal
Carer Ambassadors, Aged Rights Advocacy and workers from Aboriginal
support services.
Aboriginal Carer Ambassadors meet with the Governor
at the Carers Week Morning Tea 2004
Regional Support Programs
Regional Support Programs
The Nunga Carers group -Yaitya Kanggallanggallanna Wonggangga is
a vital part of Western Carers.
The Nunga Carers first met in July 1998 and worked on a project
about what caring means in the Aboriginal community.
The Nunga Carers Group acts as a Reference Group (they work with
us telling us what they think) for Carers SA - Western Carers to
help us support Aboriginal Carers better.
.
An artist worked with the group and helped them with the design
of a Carers Banner, which was painted by the group members. The
Banner was used, with the groups permission, for the Nunga Carers
Poster and appears at the top of this web page.
The Nunga Carers Banner was designed by Trevor Bromley with the
art work done by the Nunga Carers group and people from regional
Aboriginal get togethers.
Northern Country Carers
Thanks to the Government Program, Home and Community Care (HACC)
funding, Carers SA has Carer support staff working with Aboriginal
Carers of children with disabilities in Port Augusta.
Port Pirie and Northern Flinders areas work with a Project Reference
Group of Elders ( a group that works with us telling us what they
think). Carers, our staff and workers from other support services
meet four times a year to work on how the project helps Aboriginal
Carers. For more information call Northern Country Carers on: 1800
